Overview

Welcome to Ethereum Economic Zone’s monthly update — a running note on what’s shipped, what’s been said publicly, and where the project actually stands, for anyone following along. We’ll aim to send one of these roughly every month.

Ethereum Economic Zone is a smart contract protocol for synchronous composability between Ethereum rollups. A contract on one rollup can call a contract on another and get the return value in the same transaction, as if both lived on the same chain.

Where things stand

Quieter month publicly, heavier one on the protocol. Dr. Friederike Ernst joined the European Ethereum Institute for a live conversation on EU digital sovereignty and EEZ’s zone architecture. Our team members have also submitted speaker applications for Devcon in Mumbai, applying through its impact program for open-source projects. Beyond that, most of the month’s movement was engineering: several protocol design questions closed, and the team is preparing the next step.

Technical Progress

Four design questions closed:

  • Chain-sync commitments now use block roots, A state root alone can’t prove a rollup’s receipts, logs, and transactions match what the contracts produced.

  • L2 gas limit fixed at 15 million per transaction, matching Ethereum’s current max gas per transaction.

  • PrevRandao stays unchanged rather than rehashed each block, so apps can still detect “unchanged” reliably.

  • Rollup Zero’s upgradeability path reaffirmed. The eventual final version won’t be upgradeable; Rollup Zero itself will be, via a standard proxy pattern, prioritizing a live, trusted network now over contract finality later.

Also merged: a fix clearing a major liveness blocker, an interim transient-storage library (a stopgap ahead of native Solidity support)

Rollup 0 Development

Rollup 0 ran on Chiado testnet and the internal 12-second devnet through the month, with deployments now starting from a clean genesis (no preloaded accounts beyond the system address, funds bridged in rather than hardcoded, onchain ether checked against the contract’s internal accounting). The team redeployed main and stood up a parallel branch that hit the first real end-to-end milestone: a composer posting a valid block, with the prover signing and canonicalizing it. A more resilient prover build is in progress to replace the current one, blocked only on BLS support.

A pull request clearing a major liveness blocker has since merged, and last week the composer went live on the 12-second devnet itself. That first deployment surfaced stability bugs, now being fixed. Longer term: stabilize the Rollup Zero feature subset, build a dedicated test suite for complex cross-chain transactions, and publish a specification so other clients, not just the core team, can build their own composers.

Gnosis Chain’s EEZ Transition

We’re excited that GnosisDAO approved GIP-153 by a landslide, putting Gnosis Chain on a path from a standalone L1 to an EEZ rollup settling on Ethereum. Being first onto EEZ gives Gnosis Chain synchronous composability with Ethereum, something no existing L2 offers: the one axis where Gnosis Chain competes on its own terms, plus a first-mover seat in the emerging EEZ deployment market.
